Decentralizing Social Media on Solid lets the individual own their data

The early days of the web were wonderful. Everyone owned their own website and it spawned many creative endeavors. Though, it was relatively unapproachable for non-technical people. That’s why today, there are really only five or so websites that hold all the power over the social interactions we have online. We traded control of our own data for ease of use, and that leaves us in a world where we need to hand data over to a few large companies in order to exist online.

But, Solid is built with the philosophy that data ownership shouldn’t have to be unfriendly to the average user. Solid social media apps separate the application from the data. All data is stored on the individual’s Personal Online Datastore (Pod), but the data can be accessed and manipulated by Solid-compatible apps with a modern user experience.

For an example of this in action, see Liqid Chat, a messaging app that stores chat messages on Solid Pods, but feels just like other messaging apps. No need to configure your own server beforehand.

If you want to build social media for a Solid world, O.team can help with that.
